Chemical Formula: NaHCO3 or CHNaO3
The chemical compound Sodium Bicarbonate, also known as baking soda or bicarbonate of soda, has the formula NaHCO3. A sodium cation (Na+) and a bicarbonate anion (HCO3−) make up this salt. Sodium bicarbonate is nothing but crystalline white powder that is commonly used in baking. It has a salty, alkaline flavour, comparable to washing soda (sodium carbonate). The native mineral form is nahcolite. As a component of the mineral natron, it can be found dissolved in numerous mineral springs.

Because of its long history and widespread use, cooking soda, bread soda, baking soda, and bicarbonate of soda, all are salt’s common names. In the United States, the word baking soda is more commonly used, whilst bicarbonate of soda is more commonly used in Australia, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. It's known as Natron in many northern and central European countries. Sodium bicarb, bicarb soda, bicarbonate, and bicarb are frequent abbreviated colloquial versions.
Both sodium bicarbonate and potassium bicarbonate were referred to as saleratus in the nineteenth century, a term derived from the Latin sal ratus (meaning "aerated salt").
The prefix bi in bicarbonate stems from an old naming system that predates molecular knowledge and refers to the two molar equivalents of carbon dioxide released by potassium hydro carbonate/bicarbonate as it decomposes to (di) potassium carbonate and potassium oxide (potash). These compounds' contemporary chemical formulae now express their specific chemical compositions, which were unknown when the term "potash bicarbonate" was coined.
